| The Dragons |
After looking at both quilts, she said " I want a Dragon one!!"
My Daughter has Aspergers, and her obsession is Dinosaurs and it has now merged with all things about Dragons....she lives and breathes (fiery breaths maybe) these topics and can talk for hours and hours about them. I have lost count of how many detailed pictures she has drawn of dinosaurs and dragons.
So, being the mother I am, I said yes, I could do that, and then spent the next few days searching for any Dragon Quilt patterns. While there were some out there in google land, a few were too babyish, others were too menacing for a child's quilt.
So what's a mother to do.......don't worry darling, mummy will make one up from scratch, after all it can't be that hard.....can it????!!!! With only two quilts (made with patterns) under my belt I had a huge task ahead of me.
Just like finding quilt patterns, I had the same issue with finding just the right dragon picture.....so I got out some large paper and drew my own picture....getting advice from - she, who knows all about Dragons. After a few tweaks, and my daughters final approval I had the basis of my quilt design.
Shopping for the fabric was the fun part, and I took my daughter along so she could have some input into the fabric selection.
Lisa from quickquilt.com.au added some custom quilting to the project. Lisa took into consideration my daughters tactility by adding different textured quilting, dense and light. She embossed the zigzag sections with traceable swirls. Flowers on a few small blocks, added more features that she could trace with her fingers. Pretty variegated thread was used in places to mimic the colours of the quilt. I was extremely happy with the results. Together we made a quilt that appeased my daughters love of dragons and her sense of touch. A very calming quilt indeed....and oh so pretty...... just because a wee girl loves Dragons doesn't mean they can't be pretty!
