I have admired Quilts for some time, but for some unknown reason I had mentally placed them in my "too hard" basket. Which has really been a shame.
In my 20's I finally convinced myself to attend professional sewing classes at my local Bernina Shop. I also attended beginner's Cake Decorating Classes with my friend Janet. Like most things I do, I embraced the creative side of my new hobbies with gusto and was soon making birthday and wedding cakes as well as attending more advanced sewing courses.
I still looked at quilts and thought, nah, too hard.
Finally in 2010, and as much as I hate to admit it, I watched Better Homes and Garden, saw a segment on quilts and thought....hmmmm, if that silly woman who made an ugly door hanging, from recycled plastic coke bottles (Hayley threaten to make me one for Mothers Day) can make a quilt then surely I can do it.
I would also like to give credit to the birth of the Internet for without this wonderful tool, I would have never found the millions and millions of Blogs, Tutorials, Web pages, shops, YouTube videos , etc and all these wonderful sites that can show anyone how to do just about anything.
My first quilt was simply placing simple squares of fabric together to make a larger square thing....nothing special but I just wanted to get the idea of what it was all about. This quilt is in the linen cupboard now, because like all things in life, you get super ceded.
I then found "Moda Bake Shop" oh, ah, so many gorgeous quilts, so many talented people, so little time to fabric shop.
My nieces were the recipients of my first REAL quilts.....and while the perfectionist in me wouldn't rate them a perfect 10, I was mighty proud of my first real quilts.
I think I need to remember , it isn't about whether a quilt is perfect, its about you enjoying the process of making the quilt,...its is a journey and when you get to your destination after the mighty roads travelled....there is nothing more pleasing than a finished quilt.
